The hair warm up is proving to be most helpful because it teaches you how to make the hair look more realistic, what areas to shade and how dark to shade it, what areas to keep light, etc. I always struggled with drawing hair so this was a super cool technique to learn. The thing I found most surprising about face proportions was the whole 5 eyes idea, and how we have more space between our eyes than we realize.

I used 6 different mediums to make my piece, I used cotton balls to make white flakes, crumbled foil to make silver stars, gold acrylic to make the detailed patterns, pencil to outline the word, charcoal to fill in the word, and a blank page in an old hard cover book to create the piece in. My word was "bring a word that means a lot to you and bring it to life" so I chose the Arabic word for God and did it in the back of an old book about love.
Art criticism process: You first pick a piece, then you state one thing you like about the piece using art vocabulary, then you give a constructive criticism. My art piece (pencil drawing): I chose my pencil drawing project of a Starbucks coffee cup. The general outline of the drawing matches the actual cup pretty well, and the cup holder that was drawn a bit outwards of the cup makes an accurate expression of the cup. I would recommend working on the value of the cup by shading the inside corners of the cup to add more value and overall dimension. I had the idea because the cup was sitting in front of me, I began by measuring out the size of the cup using my pencil then putting dots on the areas to measure out the dimensions as accurately as I could. I began sketching with a HB pencil which was a good idea because it allowed me to make a light sketch and fix my mistakes if I needed to. Then I outlined the sketch with a much darker pencil, but looking back I would only go up one shade darker to avoid the harsh outline of the cup that I have now, I began scribbling inside the cup and blending with my finger, I should have used a small blending pencil instead and cleaned up the outside of the cups. My favorite material to work with this year was clay because it pushed me to be more physically and visually creative in order to bring my visual to life. I enjoyed the overall feel and stress-reducing action of smoothing out the clay and shaping it with my hand allowed me to get a feel for what I am creating. I created a piece called "San Dan Dreaming" box to put in my souvenirs from San Diego because it is my happy place. I enjoyed bringing my imagination to life and watching the clay transform from just a colorless material to a segment of my imagination and a beautiful visual aide. what is art? Webster defines art as the conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects. But I believe that art is more than just an objective definition made to fit all aspects of creativity. Art cannot have a literal definition Just as love can't truly be defined by a dictionary. Art is the equivalent of love to many, and a companion to the lonely. Whether it is art that is being created by the artist, such as painting or if it's indulging in the arts such as listening to music, love and healing can be found through all aspects of the spectrum. Art is medicine/therapy to many, the outlet for anger, pain, sadness or even joy. I would define art as the ability to create something that helps others, and yourself. Something that makes you feel alive and amazed. what did I find most difficult about this class? learning about new mediums was amazing and it opened a lot of doors for creative potential however sometimes I felt overwhelmed with ideas for one certain project and couldn't choose what idea I wanted to bring to life, whereas other times I felt completely blank and had no quality project ideas. During times when I had a lot of different ideas in my head, I would get overwhelmed on how to start and finish the project. Sometimes I would feel as if I couldn't bring my ideas to life because of my artistic incapability with a certain medium such as charcoal and would feel discouraged.
I created an Arabic calligraphy piece called patience using gold glitter acrylic and angled calligraphy markers, pens and pencils. I began by painting the canvas The project turned out great because the word came out exactly as the piece I was using as an example. I would use canvas primer under the gold acrylic to make it appear smoother as an improvement.
I did my piece on one of my friends and I using multi-media art. She has been my friend for some time now, and her and I spend a lot of time talking about our cultures (we're both middle eastern from bordering countries) so I dedicated my piece to her.
I began by cutting a piece of cardboard out of a box, measuring out a piece of paper to coordinate with the size of the cut out piece of cardboard, used glue to glue the paper down to the cardboard (DIY Canvas), printed out a picture of her and I, glued it in the middle, sketched out our two flags with pencil, went over her flag with pen, marker, and acrylic and used acrylic and sharpie for my flag. I plan on finishing my piece by adding the second palm tree, putting coconuts all around the lining of the top, glazing it, adding colors to emphasize the dimensions, and I also plan on creating a lid with a flower knob. I found smoothing out the cracks and nail marks in the clay the most difficult, but the easy solution I found was to use slip and a sponge to smooth out those marks and hollow areas. I found the shapes of the palm trees very successful, they turned out exactly how I envisioned they would. I started my pieces by smoothing out my clay then using a fitting knife to cut out my square pieces, then I attached the pieces together to create a 3 dimensional figure using a metal scraper and slip, after the pieces dried a bit I began cutting out shapes of individual palm tree leafs and coconuts.
My piece shows the theme of line through the squiggly waves that I drew for my sun rays and the curved line from the outline of the actual sun.
I think my print was successful because I was able to portray the theme of the project, but I wish I was able to carve out the lines on the block better because there were still bumps in the areas I carved. I also wish that I hadn't broken my initial block which had a different image with more lines, the last thing I would improve about my project would be carving a more profound image with more details. I used the 1st perspective to paint the bookshelf in my room, I chose this photo because it has a lot of perspective in it and it was a multidimensional item to paint. I found painting the details difficult because watercolor is difficult to paint vivid images with watercolor.
I thought both the sunset painting and the watercolor techniques page were helpful because the sunset painting allowed me to get a feel for using watercolor and the techniques showed me different ways I could portray different styles of paintings. I really like the different styles and techniques you could use in watercolor, it allows room for a lot of creativity and diversity through one medium. The thing I found most difficult about using watercolor was the consistency and the difficulty in blending the different colors smoothly because watercolor is very transparent.
